Azerbaijan is a good affordable family destination with a good mix of tradition and modernity. 5 days is a reasonable time to spend. You will find welcoming people. I went with my family, us and three kids, we spent 2 days in Baku and a day in Gaballa (nearly 3 hrs. drive) which is a hill station, right next to Russia s Dagestan. The cable car takes you to the top of the mountain. Gaballa was once a base of Islamic Sufism where Islam got spread to Russia.

I think Baku has nt got much for kids except some indoor games areas. It can be very windy so choose the right time to travel. Favorite food is Pilav which is rice and meat. According to hotel manger the best pilav in Azerbaijan is from Gaballa. I would recommend to stay near old city in Baku (Icherisheher), you will have real feel of old city. Also can stay near nizami street which is quite popular. One advive though, don’t bother going to see that fire place on outskirt of Baku, total disappointment, just a little fire coming out of ground, not massive at all,

Do visit Carpet museum if you are interested in local culture. Other notable places are flame tower, Heyder Aliyev centre, there is a massive Ferris wheel where you can enjoy amazing views of Caspian sea. Beware of photographers there snd make sure you know exactly how much will they charge you, beware of scammers. Azerbaijan has lot of similarities to turkey kind of turkey at smaller scale, If you have nt been to turkey I would advice to visit it first.
