Is halal food easily available in South Africa? I am planning to visit soon and I know Durban has plenty of halal eateries but wanted to know if that's the case with other cities too?

South Africa has a significant Muslim population (especially in areas like Cape Town and Durban), and halal food is quite easy to find in the main cities. In Cape Town, there’s the Cape Malay community which has halal restaurants and influences in local cuisine (you must try Cape Malay curry or bobotie. Areas like Bo-Kaap in Cape Town are predominantly Muslim, so everything there is halal.

Durban has a large Indian Muslim community, so you’ll find plenty of halal Indian restaurants and curry houses. In fact, even many fast food outlets in those cities are halal. Johannesburg also has many halal options due to its diverse population – neighborhoods like Fordsburg are known for halal dining (lots of Indian, Pakistani, Middle Eastern food).

When traveling outside the main cities, you might have to look a bit harder, but chances are in any big town you’ll at least find a halal fried chicken takeaway or a Turkish kebab place.

One thing which most of the people don't know is that South Africans don’t eat pork for cultural reasons (not just Muslims, but some Christian denominations too), a lot of meats like beef and lamb in supermarkets are slaughtered according to halal standards even if not labeled so. But always good to look for the halal certification logo on packaged foods.
