Queenstown, on New Zealand’s South Island, is known as the adventure capital of the world. It sits by Lake Wakatipu and is surrounded by the Southern Alps.
The road from Queenstown to Milford Sound is known as one of the most scenic drives in New Zealand and many travellers even call it one of the most beautiful drives in the world.

“The drive from Queenstown to Te Anau takes about over 2 hours. Many people try to do the full trip in one day, but with around eight hours of total driving, it can be tiring. we stayed overnight in Te Anau instead, and it turned out to be a good decision. The town is calm and sits right by Lake Te Anau, which is lovely in the evening. To our surprise we found a couple of halal restaurants in town centre, one mexican and the other Indian. You can also visit the glowworm caves across the lake for a short, fun trip.
From Te Anau, it’s another two hours to reach Milford Sound. The road is full of amazing views , lakes, valleys, and mountain passes. Fans of The Lord of the Rings will love this route too, as parts of the movie were filmed nearby.
Rudyard Kipling once called Milford Sound the “eighth wonder of the world,” and standing there, it’s easy to understand why. It’s actually a fiord, carved by glaciers over millions of years. The best way to explore it is by taking a cruise. You’ll pass towering cliffs, lush green slopes, and waterfalls that sometimes splash right onto the boat. You will see seals resting on rocks, and if you are lucky, dolphins swimming alongside. When it rains, dozens of temporary waterfalls appear, turning the whole area into a curtain of water and mist.
The mix of silence, rain, and distant rumble of waterfalls makes Milford Sound feel almost otherworldly, one of those places where you just stand still and take it all in.
You can rent a car and enjoy the drive at your own pace, or take a bus from Queenstown if you prefer to relax and take in the views.
