Embarking on a journey from Sarajevo to Mostar, we followed the scenic Neretva River, passing through picturesque landscapes and historical wonders. Herzegovina, with its natural beauty and welcoming locals, proved to be a hidden gem.
Instead of sticking to the highway, our guide, Vedad, suggested we take the scenic route alongside the Neretva River, and it was a decision we’ll never forget. The river’s turquoise waters, framed by lush greenery and towering cliffs, created a captivating backdrop. A stop at Bagrem Restoran, with its view of the river, was a highlight, and though we didn’t take the boat ride, I highly recommend it.
We continued our journey through the “Valley of Lambs,” a stretch of the Neretva Gorge where roadside restaurants offer lamb cooked over open flames. The delicious aroma pulled us to Lamb House Restaurant, where we indulged in this local delicacy—something you can’t miss while in Bosnia.
Upon arriving in Mostar, the weather turned cooler, and the historic city greeted us with its charm. The 16th-century Stari Most (Old Bridge) is a symbol of unity and an iconic landmark, connecting the two sides of the city across the Neretva River. The old town, though crowded with tourists, retained its unique character. We enjoyed Bosnian coffee at Urban Taste of Orient, a café offering stunning views of the bridge.
Wandering through Mostar’s cobblestone streets was like stepping into another era, with Ottoman-era architecture and vibrant markets. A visit to Koski Mehmed Pasha Mosque, where the climb to the minaret rewarded us with breathtaking views of the city, was a memorable experience. We also had the chance to watch the famous bridge divers leap into the cold river below—a thrilling tradition in Mostar.
For those seeking adventure, Skybridge Mostar, located just outside the city, offers not only panoramic views but also a zipline across the valley. It was my first ziplining experience, and while exhilarating, it was a bit nerve-wracking! Even our guide couldn’t resist the thrill.
A short drive from Mostar led us to Blagaj Tekke, a centuries-old Dervish monastery beside the Buna River. This peaceful spot, nestled under a cliff with crystal-clear waters, provided a serene and reflective atmosphere. We enjoyed lunch by the river, soaking in the monastery’s history and its tranquil surroundings.
Next, we made our way to Kravica Waterfalls, a natural wonder about an hour from Mostar. The falls cascade into a turquoise pool, surrounded by greenery—perfect for a refreshing swim during the summer months.
Unexpectedly, one of the most memorable experiences came from a night spent in a quiet Bosnian village. Our gracious host invited us into her flower-filled home, where we shared stories over dinner and learned more about the local culture. The visit to the village mosque and a peaceful prayer session added to the cultural richness of the trip.
On a whim, we also decided to take a day trip to Dubrovnik, Croatia, just a short drive from Mostar. On the way, we stopped at Stolac, a town known for its Ottoman-era architecture and UNESCO-protected stećci tombstones. We grabbed some delicious shawarma in Stolac before crossing into Croatia.
Dubrovnik, the “Pearl of the Adriatic,” was as picturesque as expected, with its medieval buildings and narrow streets. Though crowded with tourists, we found a quiet masjid to pray, offering a moment of respite. A boat ride on the Adriatic Sea gave us a fresh perspective of the city, and the panoramic views from the cable car on Mount Srđ were unforgettable.
On our return to Bosnia, we drove along the Adriatic coast, stopping in Neum to watch a breathtaking sunset over the sea. Neum, Bosnia’s only coastal town, offered the perfect ending to our adventure.
