Haramain Train vs Taxi: travelling between Makkah and Madinah, what actually works better?
Planning Umrah travel between Makkah and Madinah? Here’s a practical comparison of the Haramain High Speed Railway vs taxi, based on real traveller experiences from the Halal Travel Pal community, with the latest updates on Saudi railway expansion.
Saudi Arabia has announced a major expansion of the hashtag#HaramainHighSpeedRailway, with signing a contract with Spain’s Talgo to manufacture and maintain 20 additional high speed trains for the Haramain line that connects Makkah, Jeddah, and Madinah, a move that will increase the total fleet from 35 to 55 trains and significantly boost passenger capacity and operational flexibility.
The first new trains are expected to be delivered from late 2028, signalling a clear long term commitment to making high speed rail the backbone of intercity travel for pilgrims and visitors.
Against this backdrop, the long standing discussion within HTP around the train versus taxi feels more relevant than ever.
From community experiences shared over time, the Haramain train is often described as the calmer and physically easier option, especially for elderly travellers, as the journey takes just over two hours in a clean, air conditioned environment where you arrive in Madinah feeling rested rather than fatigued, something many members say makes a real difference when the focus of the trip is ibadah rather than sightseeing.
At the same time, road travel by taxi continues to appeal to many travellers for very practical reasons, particularly families or groups who value door to door convenience, flexible departure times, and the ability to travel with larger amounts of luggage without worrying about limits or station transfers, even though the four to five hour road journey can be tiring and unpredictable depending on traffic and the quality of the driver.
Interestingly some members who experienced both options say their preference changes depending on the leg of the journey, with the train often chosen when energy levels matter most, and the taxi preferred when schedules are looser or luggage is heavier, reinforcing the idea that there is no single right answer, only a better fit for each situation.
If you have travelled between hashtag#Makkah and hashtag#Madinah recently, did you choose the Haramain train or a taxi, and would you make the same choice again? What tipped the balance for you, especially if you were travelling with elderly parents or children?
