The most meaningful travel insights don’t come from guides or Google. They come from locals.
A few days ago, we shared the story of Zheng He. Then one of our community members from Indonesia reached out and filled in what we were missing. Not theory, but real experience. He had personally visited mosques named after Zheng He, including in Surabaya and Batam.
That’s where this story becomes real. Thanks Laksamana Salman for sharing this post and beautiful pictures.
“Zheng He , also known as Cheng Hu, born in Yunnan, was a Muslim admiral under Yongle Emperor. His expeditions began in 1405, and he travelled widely, including multiple visits to the Indonesian archipelago
His influence here is strongly linked with the spread of Islam through preaching, relationships, and trust.
Centuries later, that influence didn’t just remain in stories. It was rebuilt.
The Indonesian Chinese Islamic Union (PITI) established the first Muhammad Cheng Ho Mosque in 2001, inspired by the historic hashtag#NiujieMosque in China.
Today, there are around 14 Cheng Ho mosques across Indonesia.
And here’s what makes them worth paying attention to:
They are recent, mostly built after 2000.
So this is not a preserved history. It’s a revived identity.
They are community driven, led by PITI and local Chinese Muslim communities.
So this is not top down. It’s grassroots.
They blend Chinese and Islamic architecture. And they go beyond worship. Many include schools, community spaces, and educational facilities.
Travel is not just about places.
It’s about understanding how faith, culture, and history continue to live through people.
So next time you visit Indonesia, don’t just look for halal food or popular spots.
Step into one of these Cheng Ho mosques to experience that some legacies are not written in books. They are built, lived, and still standing.
The pics showed two different mosques though look very similar. One is in Surabaya and other in Batam.
