The place where Chitral’s heritage meets mindful travel

A hidden gem in northern Pakistan, Villa Ayun combines stunning mountain views with homely comfort.Valley is home to Villa Ayun, an ancestral house reimagined by siblings Maria ul Mulk and Junaid Ul Mulk into an award winning eco resort. Perfectly placed close to Chitral town and the gateway to Kalash valleys, it’s an ideal retreat for both relaxation and adventure.

Tucked away in the serene landscape of Ayun Valley, Chitral, Villa Ayun isn’t just a resort, it’s a deeply personal project, and a bold reimagining of eco-tourism in Pakistan. Spread across 25 acres of ancestral land, this beautiful sanctuary offers guests a stay that is meaningful, and regenerative.

HalalTravelPal had the pleasure of chatting with Junaid ul Mulk, co-founder of Villa Ayun, who shared the story behind this extraordinary escape.

“Villa Ayun is a passion project that my sister and I started back in 2021,” he begins. “We wanted to create Pakistan’s first true eco tourism resort, not just in name, but in every sense of the word.”

And they’ve done exactly that.

From generating their own electricity to harvesting rainwater and running a farm to table kitchen, the operations at Villa Ayun are rooted in sustainability. Junaid tells me they even supply free water to 500 villagers, and any excess electricity generated is distributed to the community, without charge.

“Our carbon footprint is zero, we produce our own power, collect rainwater, and support the local ecosystem. Even our bee farm gives us organic honey and beeswax, which we use to make handmade candles.”

But it’s not just the environment that benefits. Villa Ayun is a powerful social enterprise, too.

“We only hire locals and pay above market rates to female artisans who craft our cushions and decor. This way, we’re not just offering guests a meaningful stay. we’re also uplifting our community,” he explains.

A Stay Rooted in Heritage and Hospitality

Villa Ayun is home to 12 beautifully designed rooms, thoughtfully split between a heritage wing, rich in character and tradition, and a new wing, ideal for those who prefer a more polished, modern experience.

The new wing boasts larger rooms, expansive balconies, spacious washrooms, upgraded boilers, high-powered ACs, and double glazed windows for soundproofing and temperature control, making it a top pick for those traveling during Chitral’s warmer months.

“This is our family land, and we’re very intentional about who we welcome here,” says Junaid. “Villa Ayun is for likeminded people, nature lovers, families, couples, anyone looking for peace and connection.”

Step out of your room and you’re not just in nature, you’re immersed in it.

The property itself is alive: with a natural waterfall, sheep, cows, chickens, turkeys, and dogs freely roaming the 25 acres of land. Whether you’re walking through the orchards, watching bees at work, or sipping chai under an apricot tree, every moment here feels grounded and pure.

The Perfect Base for Exploring Chitral

One of the things that makes Villa Ayun so special ,beyond its eco-conscious roots and heritage charm is its location. Nestled in the heart of Ayun Valley, the villa sits at a sweet spot: far enough from the bustle to feel remote and restful, yet close enough to easily explore the very best of Chitral’s cultural and natural treasures.

From Villa Ayun, you’re never too far from anything that matters.

Just a short scenic drive, around 35 minutes, brings you into Chitral Town, where you can wander through the historic Shahi Mosque, explore the Chitral Fort, or browse local souvenir shops tucked between old stone alleys. A little further, you’ll find the Kalash Valley, home to the Kalasha people and their rich, vibrant traditions. It’s only an hour away, and since Ayun is the closest settlement to Kalash, you’ll beat the crowds and enjoy a much smoother journey up into the valley.
