Staying closer, for example in Valladolid, is recommended. This allows you to reach Chichén Itzá early in the morning when it opens, avoiding heat and crowds. From Cancún it’s about a three‑hour drive each way, so day tours can feel rushed and you often arrive at peak times. Valladolid is a charming town with accommodation options and makes it easier to combine Chichén Itzá with nearby cenotes and local sights.
