Did you know Nizwa was once the capital of Oman in the 6th and 7th centuries?
Just about two hours from Muscat, Nizwa is a great spot to slow down, explore, and get a feel for everyday Omani life.
Our Muslim friendly destinations series continues and here is our mini Nizwa travel guide, one of Oman’s top halal friendly destinations
Thanks to our Halal Travel Pal member Dr. Mukhtar Ali for sharing this authentic experience, especially meaningful as he lived in Nizwa for several years. His local insights and stunning photos give us a real look into what makes this city special.
What to see and do in Nizwa
•Nizwa Fort One of the oldest and most famous forts in Oman. It even had a defense system that poured boiling date syrup on intruders!
•Nizwa Souq Great for silver, spices, and fresh Omani dates. If you’re there on a Friday, check out the traditional goat market, no auctioneer, just locals calling out bids as goats are paraded in a circle.
•Falaj Daris An ancient irrigation system still used today, and a UNESCO listed site.
•Nearby trips Just 45 minutes away is Jebel Akhdar, a mountain region where the weather can be 10–15°C cooler than Nizwa. Ideal for nature walks, fruit farms, and rose gardens in spring.
Finding halal food in Oman is extremely easy and Nizwa is no exception. Some recommended Halal restaurants in Nizwa are
•Tamra Restaurant Great mix of local and international flavors, located directly across from Nizwah Fort , it offers rooftop seating with panoramic views of Fort, mountains and old city
•Al Aqr Restaurant Go to for classic Omani dishes, enjoy “local food” experience in traditional setting
•BBQ Nation A hit for Indian grills, biryani, and tandoori lovers
Nizwa is famous for its dates, with over 50 varieties sold at the souq. They’re almost always served with traditional Omani coffee, don’t miss this combo.
The city is very prayer friendly with plenty of mosques and public facilities.
Whether you’re into history, local markets, or just want a calm, culture rich escape, Nizwa is a great choice. And when you have insights from someone who’s lived there, it really makes the trip more meaningful.
