You wouldn’t expect a 500 year old mosque to be hiding in one of Guangzhou’s narrow backstreets, but that’s exactly where the XiaodongyingMosque sits.

Our Halal Travel Pal community’s stories don’t stop coming. A member who visited Guangzhou China recently told us about this spot, and it deserves a mention.

If you wander through the narrow lanes near Yuehua Road in Guangzhou, you’ll eventually reach a quiet corner where Xiaodongying Mosque sits almost hidden from the crowds. It doesn’t look grand from the outside, but it carries a history that goes back to 1468, when it was built during the Ming dynasty for a unit of Muslim soldiers stationed in the city.

The mosque has a modest courtyard layout with painted walls and a straightforward prayer space. It doesn’t follow the big pagoda style designs you see at other Chinese mosques, and that simplicity gives it its own charm.

Our member loved the calm atmosphere but couldn’t find any halal restaurants close to this mosque. If food is part of your plan, there are several halal options near the more famous hashtagHuaishengMosque, which sits in a busier part of the city.

Guangzhou, once known globally as Canton, has been a major trading centre for centuries. It still feels like a gateway between cultures, and walking into places like Xiaodongying Mosque reminds you how long Muslims have been part of that story.

If you’re heading to Guangzhou, add this small historical mosque to your list. It’s easy to miss, but worth the detour
